Choosing the Right Wire Measurement Tool

In wire management and installation, precise length measurements are crucial for ensuring efficiency and accuracy. Choosing the appropriate length measurement tool for wire can greatly improve your workflow and productivity.

Types of Wire Measurement Tools

  • Mechanical Wire Length Counters: Wire length counters, like Trumeter’s cable, wire and rope measuring range are industrial devices designed specifically for measuring the length of wire as it is pulled from a spool or reel. These wire measuring tools are essential for industries like manufacturing, where precise and reliable wire length measurement is critical for installations and maintenance.
  • Digital Laser Distance Meters: Digital laser distance meters, such as the Leica DISTO D2, provide a modern solution for wire length measurements. These devices use laser technology to quickly and precisely measure distances. Digital laser distance meters are ideal for professionals working on large-scale projects, such as construction or automotive installations.
  • Wheel Measurers: Measuring wheels like the 5000 Series offer a practical solution for measuring wire length by rolling a wheel along the wire path. They are particularly useful for on-site / outdoor applications, such as measuring wire runs along a pathway or across a field. Wheel measurers are common in landscaping, surveying, and outdoor wire installations. Different measuring wheels are available for different applications and terrains.
  • Tape Measures: Tape measures are the classic choice for measuring wire length. A reliable example is the Stanley PowerLock Tape Measure, known for its durability and ease of use. Tape measures are versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications, including residential wiring, DIY projects, and general wire length measurements.

Choosing a Mechanical Wire Measurement Tool

Trumeter offers two heavy-duty mechanical length measurement devices for cable and wire measurement. Each is designed for different applications depending on material diameter:

  • The 2600 Series is designed for materials with thickness of 6mm (0.24in) to 76mm (2.99in) and continuous high speed operation of 1500 meters/feet per minute or 50 counts per minute.
  • The 2630 Series is designed for materials with thickness of 0.5mm (0.0197in) to 15mm (0.59in) and continuous high speed operation up to 300 meters/feet per minute or 50 counts per second.

Both devices are available in feet/inches or meters/centimeters and in different configurations, including the direction of travel of the cable, wire/rope, and the location of the counter.

Both the 2600 and the 2630 have integral flanges for direct mounting, for example to a cart so the device can be moved from spool to spool for offloading of materials or to the framework of their machinery for production length capturing.

Choosing an Electronic Wire Measurement Tool

Trumeter’s range of cable, wire and rope measuring machines are available with an encoder and electronic counter interface, rather than mechanical a mechanical counter.

These are ideal for wire measurement applications requiring presets, for example where the first preset slows the machine down, and the second controls a cutter or stops the machine. Other continuous production applications may need to use a preset to activate a cutter and automatically reset to zero to continue cutting the next piece of wire.
