Case Study: IoT for Greenhouses

The Customer

The company is a globally-recognized manufacturer of advanced shading and ventilation solutions for greenhouses, as well as other industries including architecture and construction.

The Challenge

The company’s greenhouse users rely on active ventilation systems such as fans and air pumps to circulate air to optimize ventilation, temperature, humidity and air quality. But due to the open air location of these systems, they can quickly accumulate debris that negatively impacts the operation of the systems. Because the systems are located high in the greenhouse, users cannot actively monitor their performance or see abnormal amounts of debris. As a result, the systems would break down unexpectedly and leave the greenhouse without ventilation for weeks until maintenance could be scheduled.

The Solution

The company installed an APM Process Meter with a sensor to accurately measure airflow, an APM Temperature Meter with a temperature sensor and the APM CT Meter to monitor equipment’s energy usage. These used in conjunction with the APM Gateway allowed the company to install a complete cellular-based remote monitoring system for their greenhouses in just a few steps.

The Outcome

The APM Gateway with Trumeter Cloud remote monitoring was a cost effective addition to the company’s greenhouse ventilation solution with big benefits:

  • Users can track data on their ventilation systems over a full year, supporting insights on seasonal energy usage.
  • Users can get alerts when ventilation motors are starting to deteriorate, allowing them to proactively schedule maintenance.
  • Users can eliminate downtime of ventilation systems and reduce negative impacts for plants and associated loss in sales.
  • The company added a valuable feature to their product, increasing marketability and user satisfaction.
