A global designer and manufacturer of a revolutionary cleaning and sanitizing system that produces ozone-rich water for sterilisation and cleaning purposes. Using Ozone eliminates the need for harmful toxic chemicals and other harsh cleaning products. Their cutting-edge products sanitize drinking water, food and household surfaces and are used both domestically and commercially around the globe.
The customer was looking to develop a new range of high capacity water systems that required a bespoke meter to monitor filter life and effectiveness. They were looking for a small, low cost device that was able to measure flow while also taking into consideration different flow rates and water quality, and communicating the results to a PLC and smart phone app.
In addition to the multi-aspect functionality specified by the customer, the device needed to cope with the pressure, temperature, contaminants and acidity of the water, all of which affect measurement.
Before engaging with Trumeter, the customer explored several options, including an expensive sensor (or group of sensors) that would have been technically challenging to integrate both electronically and mechanically, especially fitting into a small space envelope. The Customer selected Trumeter based upon the results of some of our other projects, and our self-evident love
for custom projects and well proven engineering capabilities.
The project was complex – differences in water quality, quick changes in flow rate, and the lower pH in the water could all influence the accuracy of the measurements. Added to this, because the systems are used around the world, it is impossible to predict the quality of the inlet water.
Working closely with the Customer’s VP of Operations we developed two proposals – a single option and a double (pre and post) filter option– specifically for solutions down to Ph4 and pressures up to 5.5 bar. We developed a TDS sensor that measures dissolved solids – indicating water quality – as well as functionality to measure water temperature and flow. The device then communicates the effectiveness of their filtration unit to a PLC, indicating if the input water is too hot or cold for the process, along with the total flow through their system and the flow rate at any one time.
Throughout the development process Trumeter assisted the customer by working in close partnership to incorporate the scope change requests pragmatically and develop the most appropriate solutions that optimise the customer’s product specification at market entry.
The new filter monitor will improve the Customer’s product performance and reliability by providing real time information to their end users. Previous models indicated when a filter needed changing through measuring time.
The new solution not only measures multiple parameters to give a more accurate indication of filter life, but with enhanced communication capabilities and integration with their PLC, makes it far easier to know the real-time status of the filter.
