A leading US-based liftgate manufacturer who have established themselves as one of one of the leading innovators in the industry over more than 60 years. With products used throughout transportation, trucking and railroads, with almost 1,000 employees and representatives throughout North America, they are one of the largest manufacturers of liftgates in the world.
Our customer manufacture liftgates used by trucks and commercial vehicles of all types to make loading and unloading of cargo possible. Regular servicing of the tailgates is crucial to ensure they are working to optimum levels and do not break down.
To help schedule liftgate maintenance it’s important to accurately count the number of times a liftgate has been activated. Because of the nature of raising and lowering the gate to the level of the cargo bay, it is not uncommon for the operator to make small adjustments up or down to meet the height of the bay. A normal counter system would count each adjustment as a complete trip and report an incorrect number of trips
The customer approached Trumeter about designing a custom counter for them. Working closely with the customer to understand their exact requirements, we proposed incorporating a delay circuit, instructing the counter to count only if the activation switch was held ON for more the 5 seconds, which equates to 2 feet of travel. If the activation switch was pulsed ON and OFF rapidly the counter would ignore that signal and no count would occur.
We were able to offer the customer a choice of two potential housings, one based on our 7111 counter and the other on our 3400 counter, so they could select the best housing for their application. After selecting the 3400 housing our engineering team worked closely with them to create an engineering prototype for testing.
The result was a digital counter that integrated perfectly with their vehicle. We developed an input PCB for this application that was customized for:
- The count input to be compatible with 12V and 24V vehicles
- Custom count Input: Logic LOW <1VDC. Logic HIGH 10-48VDC (wide input range – automotive standard)
- The count on a High to Low transition
Our account manager, engineering and manufacturing teams –worked closely with the customer’s engineering team and distribution services department to progress each stage of development seamlessly, resulting in delivering the project from inception to 1st batch delivery in under 6 months.
The customized counter has been installed in more than 30,000 vehicles. It enables accurate counting, and to forecast and accurately schedule maintenance, thereby improving their customers’ user-experience and helping them avoid the additional costs of unnecessary or early maintenance on their liftgates, or worse, breakdown. Additionally, the added functionality improves their product offering and differentiates their product-line from their competitors.
